My story
Hi!
I’m Arushi Nath, a high school student in Toronto.
I love listening to pop music, rock climbing, and monitoring near-Earth and potentially hazardous asteroids for planetary defense.
I build algorithms to characterize asteroids using open data, telescopes, and open networks. My work led me to win Canada’s Top Young Scientist Award in 2022 and 2023, making me the youngest winner and the first person to win back-to-back in 33 years. It also led me to represent Canada internationally in Europe and the United States.
In Grade 8, I lost access to a school bus and started taking public transit. Getting around the city, I began noticing overflowing garbage, broken transit shelters, frequent streetcar short turns, and erratic traffic lights which made my daily commute harder than it needed to be.
I turned to what I am good at: analyzing open data, developing algorithms, writing to people, and my belief that even complex problems can be solved if they are broken into smaller, solvable ones.
Better My City grew out of this idea.
It shows that technology can be applied for the public good— whether protecting Earth from asteroids through planetary defense or improving local public services through "Better My City".
And you do not need to be of voting age to make a difference.
